The founder
Maximilian Horsley has spent more than twenty years at the sharp end of luxury Asian travel — from running the Myanmar operation of one of the world's leading luxury travel companies to managing the construction of a river cruise ship on the Irrawaddy. He was in Yangon during the Saffron Revolution. He founded Cambodia's first internationally certified balloon operation.
Hidden Worlds Travel is the distillation of all of it — a platform built not from a spreadsheet, but from decades of knowing which doors to knock on.

What our travellers say
We first put ourselves in his hands in Burma in 2016. Nine years later we went back for Cambodia — six of us across two families. Our only regret is the decade we let slip by in between.
What makes Max different is hard to put in a review, but I’ll try. Every conversation with him is its own event. He doesn’t really recommend places. He introduces you to people.
Cambodia turned out to be a string of kitchens, courtyards and quiet moments that no amount of research on our part would ever have found. We slept on a sandy island in the Mekong, watched Irrawaddy dolphins surface a paddle’s length from the boat, walked Phnom Kulen with a local guide, made rice noodles badly and were laughed at very kindly for it.
He builds moments where the world goes still and it feels as though you are the only people standing in one of the most visited places on earth. Every minute of it was shaped around us — our ages, our energy, what our children could take on, what my sister and her husband wanted.
There will be more trips. There is no one else we would ask.
We have traveled the world for over 35 years and I want you to know that our trip to Myanmar was the best ever. I have been a world traveler to distant and exotic places for most of my life, many of them prior to their popularity and commercialisation. I have trekked with various outfitters in Nepal, Ethiopia, Egypt, Bhutan, Patagonia, India and the Galapagos to name a few. I can tell you, without reservation, that our time travelling throughout Burma (as I continue to refer to it) with Max Horsley was one of our best trips. Myanmar has been through an awful time, and its tourism has collapsed with it. But parts of the country remain safe enough for the more intrepid traveller — and will reward them beyond almost anywhere else in Asia. Bagan and Inle Lake are two of the continent’s genuine wonders, and for the moment you will have them nearly to yourself.
Go in with eyes open: the FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel to much of the country, including these areas, and standard travel insurance won’t cover you — specialist cover is needed. This is not a trip to book from a brochure, which is rather the point. Write to us and we’ll give you an honest, current picture of what is and isn’t sensible.
And when the country finds peace, what our founder really wants is to take people back to the Naga Hills, which he knew well in quieter days. That will have to wait. Bagan won’t.

Angkor Wat needs no introduction — it is a must on any serious Asian itinerary, and it earns the crowds it draws. But we do Angkor a little differently: Steve lives just outside Siem Reap and knows the temples hour by hour — which gate at first light, which corners the buses never reach — so you will have far more of it to yourself than most visitors ever do.
And few ever hear about the coast: Song Saa, a private island in the Koh Rong archipelago whose beaches stand with any in Asia, and a handful of quieter islands nearby that we rate just as highly.
It would be remiss not to mention that our founder Maximilian’s own hot air balloon company, Cambodia Balloon Adventures, is based in Siem Reap — so we gently insist you see Angkor from the air, the temple complex and its moats laid out beneath you at dawn. After that, the Cardamom Mountains in the southwest: dense rainforest, hidden waterfalls, and some of the last true wilderness in Southeast Asia — about as far from the crowds as Cambodia gets.
Steve first visited Cambodia in the less happy days of the civil war, in 1994. He returned full time in 2011 and has specialised in Cambodian travel ever since. He lives in a traditional wooden house outside Siem Reap and spends much of his own time exploring the quieter backways of the region — which is exactly where he’ll point you.

Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom that does things its own way: tourism is deliberately limited, development is measured against happiness rather than growth, and the result is a country that has kept hold of itself. Fortress monasteries, forested valleys, high passes strung with prayer flags. Our founder Maximilian fell in love with Bhutan in 2003, motorbiking its valleys alone for two months — a truly privileged experience.
If you can, come in winter. From November the black-necked cranes descend from the Tibetan plateau to the Phobjikha valley — one of the great wildlife spectacles of the Himalayas, and the season most visitors miss.
Our partner in Bhutan, John, ran WWF's programme in the country for many years before turning to travel. Few people know its valleys, wildlife and people better — the crane season in Phobjikha is his suggestion, and it's typical of the sort of thing he knows that the brochures don't.

India is too big to ‘do’ — a lifetime wouldn’t cover it, and trying ruins the trip. Our man on the ground, Manan, has spent decades navigating its contradictions. His advice: pick a corner and give it time. Three he’d point you to: the Ziro valley in Arunachal Pradesh, home of the Apatani people and about as far from the tourist circuit as India gets; the rock-cut caves of Ajanta and Ellora in Maharashtra, carved between the 2nd century BC and the 10th century AD — one of the great artistic achievements of the ancient world; and Gokarna in Karnataka, the beach that Goa used to be, just up the coast.

Bangkok earns its reputation, but don’t let it keep you. An hour north lies Ayutthaya, the ruined former capital — a World Heritage Site most visitors skip in the rush south to the islands. In the far north, the hills climb to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. And for the beach, Edwin points people to Koh Lanta — the sand without the crowds.
